we're inspired to actually play in the games we're provided to review and, without seeking to get too overly enthusiastic, I became pretty thrilled to find something that didn't cause me to need to "transform" my game disc in to a small pile of broken polycarbonate plastic within five minutes.

War for Cybertron can be a co-op based third-person shooter in which you control Decepticon and after that Autobot forces since they battle for control over their planet. It's actually a prequel set 1000's of years before the movies, so thankfully there is no Shia LaBeouf (although I guess a look and feel by Megan Fox wouldn't go amiss).

To tackle my immediate assumptions: ugly and derivative - well, would it be? The graphics, and especially the cutscenes, are consistently impressive, and occasionally gorgeous. And while blasting robot aliens in space is probably not essentially the most original gaming premise ever (actually, should you consider when Space Invaders premiered it may well be the least original premise ever) you can find enough inventive touches to create the game feel pretty fresh.

Clicking the left analogue stick "transforms" your character into among an array of vehicles (using the fighter jet proving particularly fun), a function that actually works itself seamlessly into gameplay. Speeding high off a ramp, turning back into humanoid-shape in mid-air, and applying for a small grouping of enemies which has a rocket cannon while you sail over them is just about as fun as it sounds.
