While you begin as a normal chap, the plot finds ways to give you the game's signature slow-down abilities quickly. Things then continue in FEAR's recognisable quick-quick-slow rhythm. Most of the time you're involved with fire-fights against human soldiers (with all the occasional monster to handle). These are interspersed with psychological horror sections in places you start experiencing psionic interference, odd visions and visual distortions making it difficult to locate the exit.

It is really an easy structure to dissect critically. The hyper-violence and also the psychology make odd bedfellows, but also in practice are executed so solidly how the whole thing just about holds together. Particularly with regard towards the latter, you can find moments of flair similar to Monolith's flourishes in games like Nobody Lives Forever and TRON 2.0. Some of the game is at tunnels (though don't always grey), doing things like, say, fighting your way around a college and using items of stage-production for cover is quite witty.
