You choose a faction (Nod or GDI include the only options this time -- the out-of-this-world Scrin aren't playable), then you certainly choose a "type" of mobile base (referred to as a crawler) from which to produce all your units. Both sides' crawlers may be Offense (tanks, walkers, etc.), Defense (infantry, turrets, etc.), or Support (air units, ally-assist units, etc.), and you'll switch to yet another kind of crawler anytime within a match. As with World in Conflict, all units have the freedom: You can produce up to you want, whenever you want, up to a limit set from the mission. In case a unit dies, it may be replaced by more than one units equal to its value, however, you can never breach the maximum limit.

Because more robust units take up more cap space than less powerful ones, it's nearly impossible for one side to get a qualitative advantage on the other. You are able to spam small stuff (usually most effective method) or delay for the big bashers, your opponent will invariably have the same relative strength. This makes for little risk in losing units; if your enemy builds units you're weak against, simply scuttle all of your dudes and retool to get units they're weak against, then they'll carry out the same, etc. In other words, straight fights in C&C4 play similar to a boxing match between two guys with iron jaws and teensy weensy hands. You and your opponent can pound away at each other till you're both spent such as an addict's last dollar, but nobody's knocking anybody out.
