A great deal of Ghosts' success is a result of its unique sensation of humility. Infinity Ward did a fantastic job reining from the excesses of previous Call of Duty campaigns, replacing the crumbling Eiffel Tower and runaway Tube trains of contemporary Warfare 3 having a less heavy-handed approach that employs spectacle--and there's an abundance of that particular here--as increasing numbers of of the complement to the core combat. It's a game title that avoids falling obsessed about its very own cinematic ambitions, allowing the ruthless combat and well-paced encounters for taking center stage within the plot.

Too, because the story is every bit a predictable tribute to American military might, it's a good thing. Once the collapse from the Middle Eastern oil economy, South America's oil-producing states join together to create an economic and military superpower referred to as Federation. Naturally, the Federation decides to hijack a satellite weapon system and change it against america. The conflict that follows is a dedicated to the Ghosts, an enigmatic tier one task force having a penchant for lethal efficiency and sweet skeleton masks.

A functional and rather harmless one, though the whole thing feels like a geopolitical Mad Lib. Ghosts delivers only enough narrative to work as a catalyst for the whirlwind tour through global warzones, while resisting the impulse to club you on the head with plot twists and gratuitous awe and shock moments. In lots of ways, Infinity Ward has crafted a narrative that reflects the stoic nature from the Ghosts themselves: focused, efficient, and focused on the job on hand.

The approach makes sense: Ghosts includes a terrific variety of shootouts and set up pieces, largely unburdened with the sensation that you're merely an additional in someone else's adventure. At various points you are going right after a missile launch center by tank as well as an offshore industrial facility by helicopter, each in the role of excellent samples of how good Call of Duty's zippy and responsive controls does apply toward massive, fully navigable battlefields. It's yet another game using a knack for crafting tense shootouts in unexpected locales, highlighted from a brief jaunt into outer space containing you floating in one component of debris to another, aiming the shots that can make a Federation soldier's helmet decompress in the gruesome hiss.

Moments such as these further the game's excellent pacing, becoming welcome palette cleansers after several of the more spacious and chaotic battles.

In a more varied and generous way, even though it all adds up to a campaign that follows the familiar rhythms of the series. There's a genuine willingness to help you to stretch your legs and experience the spectacle, driven with the feeling that--in most cases--you're normally the one at the core of the action.
