The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Download PC Review
The prologue is, thankfully, elegantly delivered. Told in flashback form, it sees Geralt explaining the events that led as much as the current time. Needless to say, he’s a inside a bit of a predicament. This pre-story story happens in the midst of an enormous castle siege, which makes for a spectacular backdrop, and at least as spectacular because Ostagar portions of Dragon Age: Origins.
It’s Chapter One in places you begin to see the game open a bit. Having followed a ruthlessly linear story to the few hours, you are then given entry to a village as well as the surrounding forest. There’s quite a lot to explore, and a decent area to roam about in. There are, of course, multiple sidequests, and the are fun, interesting and convincing. Nothing has to date struck me as too ridiculous, in terms that game quests so often do. There’s also scope for foraging for herbs, and even collecting other general crafting crap to become carted back to the village and turned into stuff - if you do the formula for doing so. All greatly the familiar fantasy strategies to doing things, but pleasing to learn with. Geralt’s inventory will become a management game by itself.
Combat, then. Yes, it’s better than the original. It also took me longer to recognize than the original. I became a little surprised that there was nothing more than a tooltip at start of game to clarify what is actually a fairly sophisticated melee system. It feels pleasingly organic, when you have the hang of it, however. Essentially you've got a basic capacity to do a quick light blow, or perhaps a slower heavy blow. It's also possible to hit E to block. These basics enable you to take on any opponent, although collection of that opponent is frankly somewhat wobbly. I’ll probably enjoy it.
